{"id":78,"date":"2023-07-04T21:01:06","date_gmt":"2023-07-04T21:01:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/westcoastbrie.com\/?page_id=78"},"modified":"2023-07-04T21:02:11","modified_gmt":"2023-07-04T21:02:11","slug":"serratus","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/westcoastbrie.com\/index.php\/serratus\/","title":{"rendered":"Serratus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In 2020, my friend <a href=\"http:\/\/rrna.ca\/\">Artem Babaian<\/a> and I started the <a href=\"https:\/\/serratus.io\/\">Serratus Project<\/a>, an effort to build a &#8220;tree of life&#8221; for the Covid-19.  The project later evolved into a search and cataloguing project for all known viruses, finding them hidden deep inside a vast database of freely available genomics data submitted by labs all around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We submitted this work to Nature, a renowned scientific journal, where it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-021-04332-2\">was published in Jan 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I developed and scaled the original search and computing architecture for the project, mostly from scratch, including a custom job scheduler, scaling logic, Terraform scripts to provision infrastructure, Docker images, and a monitoring and debugging stack.
